Cemetery, the Wall, the Ghetto

On the tour today, we discussed much about Jewish history in Frankfurt.  We visited a Jewish cemetery, which is surrounded by a wall covered in silver plaques with names of people, from Frankfurt, who were killed by the Nazis.  There are also used to be a wall separating the ghetto from the city center, this is where the Jewish population was forced to reside.

  1. I remember that Jewish people put rocks on graves so when I saw the pepples on these plaques, I looked it up and here is what I found from Rabbi Lerner:
    Question

Why do Jews put pebbles or rocks on graves (like in the movie Schindler's List)?

    Answer

It is currently a Jewish custom to put a pebble on the headstone when one visits a grave to mark that you have been there and that you respect the one who has passed on.
