Andechs & Lake Amersee

We took a train to Hersching today to visit a Benedictine Monastery in Andechs.  We had heard and read great things about it.  I wasn't as impressed as I expected to be.   The scenery wasn't magnificent up on the hill and we were unable to look at many buildings on the property.  Plus there were no pamphlets or readings in English, so we couldn't figure out much history of the place and they didn't provide English speaking tours - poor Americans.  :(

They brew their own beer at the monastery...
so of course we had to try it out!

After visiting the monastery, we headed down to the town of Hersching, which is located on Lake Amersee.  We walked around and sat out by the water.  It was beautiful and it made me feel like we were really on vacation.  This place is a lot less touristy than other lakes in the region.  It was a Friday night, so the streets were filled with people.  They were mini campfires set up, and some street performers around.

Ran into a nun off the train.  She needed some help with her walking (ski) poles.  She seemed a bit off, when we asked of the monastery she didn't seem impressed, but told us the best thing was the beer - ha!

Ben running on the trains with beer...
didn't want to ride for 40 minutes without one.

  5. I studied sailing at the Herr Seidel Segel Shule (?)in 1964. I was told that I was the first American to do so. Is the sailing school still there?
